The blue line

These new paintings have evolved around the subject of love-relationships – between humans (through the art of acting in Taboo or real ones, as in One glorious night as Avatar), humans and nature (the re-enactment of a dangerous sea voyage For the evening programme), humans and animals (on a platonic level, Mutual understanding – the wonderful relationship between a teenage boy and his tom cat) and between humans and machines (Mr Hoffman loves the blue girl). Leukefeld frames these relationships as TV news-like scenarios in order to question contemporary political decisions, environmental issues and the human tendency to ‘normalcy bias’.

The working title for this series is The blue line. Blue was chosen to be the predominant colour because of its significance in European culture. On the colour spectrum, blue is generally described as cold. In terms of symbolism, however, it is also associated with harmony, longing and contentment.
