ilka Leukefeld has been awarded a six-month scholarship by the Kunststiftung Saxony-Anhalt and the Kloster Beregsche Stiftung to develop ideas around the subject of ’Temple of Friendship’ and ‘Culture of Friendship’. Her research will centre around the Gleimhaus Museum of the German Enlightenment in Halberstadt and the 300th anniversary of Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim’s birth in 1719. The artist wishes to thank Dr Ute Pott, Director of the Gleimhaus Museum, for her support.

Leukefeld’s latest work, TheThree-Legged Golden Toad, is a humorous reflection on the tough life of an artist and a stern review of contemporary political and environmental events. It will be shown for the first time at the German Embassy’s Frieze Fringe Event in London, Twenty-five Years of German Unity Mirrored in the Arts, alongside paintings by Peter Herrmann, sculpture by Hans Scheib and a film by Jürgen Böttcher.
ilka Leukefeld was an Artist-Investigator for the Press Room project at the 56th Venice Biennale 11-13 August, 2015. Press Room developed a parallel dialogue alongside the Creative Time Summit by establishing a ‘pirate press’ to investigate news creation through expanded acts of visual reportage. It was structured around three public breakfast ‘press briefings’ held at the Wales in Venice venue.
“My response to three breakfast briefings took the form of three drawings (l-r, above): DAY 1 – #CesarePietroiusti – Lo senti il vento? DAY 2 – #MiriamGhani – Can a biennale enact politics? DAY3 – #CharlesGaines – Political art is art that attempts to link the personal and subjective with the social.
“I recycled sheets of paper from the May Press Room in Venice sessions to make the drawings, using a felt-tip pen instead of the usual ink.”
Participating artists in Venice included Pippa Koszerek, Jane Lawson, Amy Stevenson, Maurice Carlin and Robert Frankle; plus many other artists contributed via Facebook and Twitter.
ilka Leukefeld’s solo exhibition – the site-related room installation ‘Vom globalen IRr SiNn’ (of global madness) – will open at Galerie Süd in der Feuerwache, 39112 Magdeburg, Halberstädter Straße 140 on Thursday, 9 April (until 15 May). The opening event (7.30pm) will feature Dr Karsten Steinmetz talking about Leukefeld’s work and there will be a live performance by Herbert Beesten and music by Hemm Rohm DJ Set.
